About us,

’t Gouden Mandeken, one of the oldest cafe’s in Ghent, even in Belgium, is a traditional pub with a rich history. The building was once part of the Groot Vleeshuis. In another life, North African cuisine was served here. But for the last thirty years, alongside a block of cheese, chips, and coffee, beer has been the predominant ingredient served. In recent years, ’t Mandeken has been run by Yo, who is assisted by a team of experts with years of pub experience, both in front of and behind the bar.

The pub attracts a diverse clientele, ranging from Spanish and German tourists who wish to pay separately, boisterous Dutch people and decadent Russians, to regular patrons with their own bills. Just like the clientele, the seating arrangements are very diverse. At the bar, one can easily strike up a conversation with the regulars or the staff; in the main hall, one can take a seat at one of the nine tables. Those who take the stairs arrive on the first floor, where long tables accommodate larger groups. Romantic souls can take a seat by the stained-glass windows offering a view of the Pensmarkt and Groentenmarkt. Those who enjoy sitting under the open sky can take a seat on one of our terraces at either the front or the back.
